The PS5 Digital Console Will Be Cheaper to Run Due to Lower Power Usage

We now know the full specifications for both PS5 hardware SKU’s. They are simple and easy to understand. One has a disc drive and the other does not. Otherwise they are identical. But, one of them has a larger power supply than the other.

The console with the disc drive features a 350 Watt power supply. Comparatively the PS5 Digital Edition console has a modest decrease in wattage by 10 Watts, a meagre 340 Watts!

Disc drives are used less and less on consoles. They simply are used to install discs and then are used to license check your game. After this they are pretty much left dormant. Maybe this is why the decrease in wattage isn’t as much as you would expect.
