Former Sony CEO and all round good guy, Jack Tretton, has been talking about his experiences at Sony in a very candid interview and has mentioned that the PlayStation 3 launch was like being captain of the Titanic. Jack mentioned that there were a lot of challenges coming up to the PS3’s launch, in that there wasn’t enough supply of units, it was more expensive than they wanted it to be, the Xbox 360 was already available and there was a steep learning curve in the software development.
That was about 30-60 days before I became CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, so I used to say it was like being made the captain of the Titanic before it hit the iceberg, it was not the ideal time to take over.
Tretton went on to say that whilst the launch was a struggle, the PlayStation 3 was ultimately a success. Jack Tretton is currently working on indie projects, and gathering funding for indie developers that he wants to work with and that want to work with him.
