Sony has announced that as of February 8th, 2014, the company has sold 5.3 million units through to consumers, over 1 million more since the last update. The news was announced on the official PlayStation Twitter feed, and was also mentioned by Adam Boyes, Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations at SCEA. The figure is extremely impressive considering the Xbox One launched around the same time-frame, but has only sold around 3.6 million units in comparison.
Sony targeted 5 Million sales for the PlayStation 4 by the end of March 2014 in September 2013, a couple of months before the PS4’s launch, but have managed to beat their target, and they have yet to launch in one of their most loyal territories, Japan. The PlayStation 3 sold around 3.5 million in its fiscal year on sale, although it was more expensive, but there were a lot of people that didn’t think Sony would hit 5.3 million units so soon. Suffice to say, more consoles sold = more games = happy PlayStation gamers.
