It wasn’t that long ago when everyone in the games industry would look to Japan for inspiration and if you were making a horror game the man you’d try to imitate would have been Shinji Mikami, creator of the survival horror genre. But it seems even the father of gaming horror needs some help every now an then.

In the latest gameplay trailer for The Evil Within the developers reveal some of the things you can expect to see in the eagerly anticipated title. A few mechanics caught our eye. Stealth kills was one of them. You might say this has been done many times in games before, but it reminded me of something…

And then we saw this mechanic, the throwing a glass bottle to distract enemies to lure them away mechanic. Something that was clearly popularised by The Last of Us.

Many developers have a great deal of respect for each other, and we believe Mikami is paying homage to Naughty Dog by using the mechanic and show-casing it in a trailer. I can imagine him tipping his hat to Neil Druckmann and the team.

The Evil Within will be releasing very soon and we can’t wait!
