CyberConnect2 has got quite a good reputation when it comes to anime games, with the Naruto games being both fun and well made. So we were coming into JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven with high hopes, and we were not disappointed. Fans of the anime will no doubt be happy to see that the vibrant, almost neon style of graphics is also implemented in this game, and everything looks amazing.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven’s story starts off with Jotaro Kujo defeating the series’ arch-villain Dio, at which point several characters that have died throughout the series return to life to attack them. They then meet someone from the Speedwagon foundation who helps JoJo and his friends travel through time, space and dimensions to stop the cause of this phenomenon. Yes it is as crazy as it sounds, and fans of the anime will already be aware how out of this word the JoJo universe can be. It’s also nice to see that the game isn’t just following the story of the anime and is providing something new.
As you probably expected from this anime, game which seems to be the case for all games based on animes for some reason (why?!), Eyes of Heaven is also a fighting game. So it is a god thing that the combat is actually really good. One of the differences between this and most other anime fighting games is the 2v2 combat. Every fight is a tag team battle where you control one of the characters, and the CPU controls the other. You can perform various combos using the square and triangle buttons, and changing the timing between them.
The combat is very frantic and mixes in animations, attacks and dialogue within the battle. Holding L1 and following prompts on screen will start some dialogue and open up some new attacks. If you press L1 and R1 at the right time you’ll perform a special Dual Combo attack and can substantially damage your enemy if you time it right. There over 50 characters to play as in this title, and each character has his or her own battle style. Some of these characters will be Stand Users, a power that manifests as an apparition, whereas some may just have vampiric powers gained from Dio.
